[ARCHIVED] $200,000 Bond Set for Suspect Involved in Assaults on a Peace Officer

Family, Aaron DOB 04201982

On Saturday, Oct 18, 2025, Aaron Family (DOB 4/20/82) was arrested on multiple charges related to a series of crimes that began shortly after noon with a hit and run crash in the Safeway parking lot in Idaho Springs. This week, bond was set for Family at $200,000.

At 12:08pm on Oct 18, Idaho Springs Police Department (ISPD) responded to a report of the driver of a dark gray Toyota Tacoma driving recklessly and harassing people in the parking lot of the Safeway. The Tacoma then struck a vehicle in the parking lot and fled. The Clear Creek Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) responded to assist ISPD with a search for the suspect vehicle. The Tacoma is registered to Aaron Family and after an unsuccessful search, a Clear Creek sergeant and an ISPD officer responded to Family’s residence in Dumont.

While driving to the residence, the sergeant and officer located the Tacoma in the 500 block of Dumont Rd (CR 310) and were able to block the vehicle. They instructed Family to exit the vehicle, but he was non-compliant. When the officer and sergeant attempted to remove Family from the vehicle, he put the vehicle in reverse, dragging the officer and sergeant backward several feet and knocking the officer down. Family then fled westbound on Dumont Rd, striking ISPD’s patrol vehicle as he left the scene. The officer was transported, treated, and released. She sustained serious bodily injury due to a large laceration on her leg but is expected to fully recover. Dash cam video of the assault on a peace officer is available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/I-uF1xVsgjs

Several minutes later, Clear Creek’s sergeant saw the suspect vehicle enter I-70 East at mm 235. The sergeant entered the highway at the same location and ran emergent in the eastbound express lane to catch up to the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle was traveling in the right lane when the sergeant attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle then rammed the patrol vehicle, forcing it into the concrete barriers that divide the eastbound and westbound lanes. The sergeant was not injured but the patrol vehicle quickly became disabled. Body worn camera video is available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/AeFOaR4eNV0.

Later that afternoon, law enforcement was able to take Family into custody. After a successful Stop Stick deployment in the 3400 block of Stanley Rd (CR 312), the Tacoma crashed in the 400 block of Dumont Rd at 3:10pm. Family fled on foot but was caught a few minutes later on the temporary detour that connects Dumont Rd with Silver Lakes Drive in Dumont. While resisting arrest, Family spit in a Clear Creek detective’s face, adding 2nd Degree Assault on a Peace Office to his charges.

Family remains in custody, pending the 2nd Degree Assault and Resisting Arrest charges as well as:

1st Degree Assault on a Peace Officer with Deliberation

    Menacing

    Vehicular Eluding

Driving Under the Influence of Drugs

    Reckless Driving

    Reckless Endangerment

Failure to Give Information and/or Aid After Damaging Another Vehicle

The 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will determine final charges. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven otherwise through the judicial process.
