This morning, December 10, 2024, the Clear Creek Board of County Commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) for the Sheriff’s Office to provide law enforcement services for the Town of Georgetown. The Sheriff’s Office has historically provided limited police services to Georgetown through mutual aid, such as emergent cover for its officers. Recent resignations, however, have left Georgetown without law enforcement officers. Therefore, the Sheriff’s Office is expanding its public safety services for the town through an IGA that supersedes the previous mutual aid agreement.

Sheriff Matthew D. Harris explains: “Our mission of ‘Public Service First, Public Safety Always’ is not just lip service. The Sheriff’s Office provides police services in unincorporated Clear Creek County to ensure the public’s safety, quality of life, and peace of mind. But when we have a local community that needs our help, we will also be there to deliver public safety services for its residents and visitors. Right now, that community is Georgetown.”

The terms of the IGA include:

  • Response to 9-1-1 emergency calls for service and enforcement of the Colorado Revised Statutes, Model Traffic Code, and municipal ordinances (excepting building-code related), as follows:
    • Three (3) days per week
    • Eighteen (18) hours per week
    • The days and hours will be based on the town’s needs and average call volume
  • Administrative services will also be provided, including incident reports, evidence management, sex offender registration, and records requests.
  • Patrol services and administrative services shall be provided at the overtime rate for respective staff.
  • Outside of pre-established patrol shifts, response to 9-1-1 emergency calls for service “after hours” will be billed on a per-call basis at the same rate as outlined above.

The Sheriff’s Office implemented the IGA on December 1, 2024, to ensure Georgetown had adequate services to cover its annual Christmas Market celebration. The IGA will remain in effect until May 1, 2025, unless terminated earlier as allowed by the agreement. Both parties agree to a review of the IGA’s execution on or before February 1, 2025.
